Bridesmaid Test Dress.

This fall I will be in the wedding party of one of my oldest and best friends, and she’s given me complete control of what type AND color of dress to wear. This is of course  a thrilling freedom–but it’s also a little scary, especially if you’ve promised yourself (as I have) that you’ll [...]

Red & White.

I’ve been thinking a bit about embroidery lately and wondering if it was time to return to it. Maybe it was seeing the inspiring and impressive needlework at ‘Twixt Art and Nature, or maybe it was dipping my toe into the waters of sashiko recently.  Regardless, I’ve been wanting to give it a go.  To [...]

What Were the Chances?

I have to thank Millie Motts, who curates an ambitiously extensive collection of images of vintage clothes and advertising and ephemera, for a huge happy surprise today! New England, Some Knitting, and a Skirt.

This weekend found me in New England, where I was treated to what I hope will be the last wet, sloppy, wintry storm of the season. But before the sleet started, I was lucky enough to make my way to an antiques mall/junk emporium, where I bought a bag of this fabric:I plan to [...]

Next Stop, Duct Tape Aisle?

I am beginning to believe that, if I’m committed to making dresses for myself, I should invest in a dressmaker’s form. And, based on a recommendation from a crafty librarian friend, I MAY even gather up the courage to make my own dressmaker’s form out of duct tape! Why the conclusion that a dressmaker’s form is [...]

Waistcoat for Him.

A few weeks ago I embarked on a knitting project that will be, assuming that it turns out well and that I don’t pull it all apart in disgust, the first item of clothing that I’ve knitted for my husband. And by clothing, I’m not counting the scarves offered to him while we were still [...]
